The story behind Bernie the Blob Monster
What was your inspiration for designing Bernie?
I have been drawing characters and making up stories since the second grade. I first created Bernie my sophomore year in high school (I was drawing in the middle of my math class). I needed a monster character for the story I was working on and he happened to pop into my head at that moment. Funny enough, he ended up not being a vicious crazy monster who would terrorize my other character; he actually ended up being a monster who pretended to be vicious at first, but then actually just wanted to go find something to eat or explore the land.
What made you decide to get a Budsies of Bernie?
Ever since that first comic I drew him in, he just stuck to me and I continued drawing him and improving his design. He was always the character that grabbed the most attention of those I shared my art with. That always kept me inspired to continue developing his design and personality. When I found out about Budsies via an episode of Shark Tank years ago; I decided to save up my money so that I could get a taste of my dream by seeing one of my characters as a stuffed animal. When the time came to order my Budsie, I chose the most well known character I have which is Bernie.
How would you describe Bernie’s personality?
His personality became more relaxed and funny the more I played around with him. He considers his job to be sleeping and his hobby to be eating. If he’s not sleeping all day, he enjoys staying inside and daydreaming or grabbing a cup of coffee and exploring the land. He has pros and cons to his gluttonous personality, which is what I like the most about him.
What makes Bernie a great companion?
Bernie is a great example of not having to be perfect to make a positive impact on someone's life. In his kingdom, he's the only monster of his kind that has spots. This led to him being bullied and discriminated against as a little monster, but Bernie has always carried this confident, careless personality. He loves that he is "one of a kind" and "takes pride in his spots!" Bernie is the perfect companion for anyone that loves to eat, sleep and most importantly, have fun.
